Koumeika and Balos, Samos

The name of this village in the south-western part of Samos is spelled Kouméïka, but sounds like Gouméïka when pronounced.

Central Square of Koumeika

Central Square of Koumeika

In the central square of the village stands this plane tree and the villagers sip their coffees in its shade.
There is a white marble fountai in the square. It is beatifully sculpted.

Koumeika is on higher ground, and if you go down toward the sea, you will arrive at Balos. This is how it looks like.

Balos Beach

Balos Beach

There were no real bathing facilities (at least when we visited there in 2006), and the people swimming here were either locals or those who staying in hotels and rental-apartments nearby.

This is the taverna “Akrogiali” on the Balos beach.

Taverna in Balos

Taverna in Balos

It offers not only grill dishes like souvlaki but also slow-cooked (mageirefta) dishes like Spanakorizo (spinach rice), Imam Bayaldi (fried aubergine cooked again in oven with onion), etc. and these were excellent.

This is the address (?) and phone-number copied from their paper napkin ↓
